Low Tide Treasures: A Local’s Guide to Beachcombing in Parksville

There’s something magical about the way the tide rolls out in Parksville. As the ocean recedes, it unveils kilometres of sandy shoreline teeming with natural treasures. Whether you're a lifelong beachcomber or just here for a coastal wander, this guide is for anyone who finds joy in salty breezes and shoreline surprises.

Why Parksville Is a Beachcomber’s Paradise

Parksville is home to some of the most expansive tidal flats on Vancouver Island. When low tide hits—especially during a full or new moon—beachgoers are treated to wide, walkable beaches that stretch far into the sea. It’s a prime spot for:

  • Collecting colourful sea glass
  • Admiring sculptural driftwood
  • Discovering sand dollars, shells, and marine oddities
  • Exploring tidal pools full of tiny creatures

Best Times to Go Beachcombing

For the best finds, time your visit during low tide, ideally early in the morning. You can check local tide charts (like Tide Forecast) to plan your outing. Pro tip from a few of us locals? Try going out the morning after a full moon—Mother Nature tends to show off then.

Where to Beachcomb in Parksville

Here are a few of our favourite spots close to Bayside:

Rathtrevor Beach Provincial Park: Famous for its shallow tide pools and long, walkable beach.

Parksville Community Beach: Easy access, parking, and a central location for families and casual strollers.

Qualicum Beach: A quieter beach with stunning views and lots of interesting finds.

Respecting Local Laws: Shellfish & Seafood Harvesting

While it might be tempting to collect clams, oysters, or mussels you see along the shore, it’s critical to follow local health and safety regulations.

Here’s what you need to know:

A fishing license is required to harvest any shellfish or seafood, even for personal use.

Many areas are permanently closed to harvesting due to contamination or environmental protection.

Consuming unregulated seafood can cause serious health risks, including paralytic shellfish poisoning.

Reminder: No shellfish or seafood is permitted inside the Bayside Oceanfront Resort. We appreciate your help in keeping our environment and our guests safe.
