Accessibility at Bayside Resort: More Than Just a Ramp

Imagine checking into a hotel where every detail has been thoughtfully designed to make your stay seamless—where accessibility isn’t just a checkbox but a commitment to making travel easier for everyone. That’s exactly what the Access Oceanside Association (AOA) aims to ensure with their recent accessibility audit of Bayside Resort.

But what does an accessibility audit actually mean? And why should it matter to all of us?

Who’s Behind the Audit?

The Access Oceanside Association is a local organization dedicated to ensuring businesses and public spaces in Parksville and beyond are welcoming to everyone, regardless of mobility. Their work isn’t about pointing fingers—it’s about working with businesses to improve accessibility and raise awareness of what true inclusivity looks like.

In early 2023, they conducted an audit of Bayside Resort, assessing everything from hotel rooms to public spaces. The goal? To identify strengths, highlight areas for improvement, and help the resort continue making strides toward full accessibility.

The Current State of Accessibility at Bayside Resort

Bayside Resort has already taken important steps to be more accessible. All public spaces—restaurants, bars, the café, and conference rooms—are fully wheelchair-friendly with an elevator serving all floors. That means whether you're here for a weekend getaway or a business event, getting around the main areas won’t be a challenge.

However, the report also highlighted areas that need work. While the hotel offers one designated Accessible Room (B215)—complete with grab bars, a handheld shower, and a wider bathroom door—many of the other 58 rooms have narrower doors and standard bathrooms that may be difficult to navigate for some guests.

Pools and fitness facilities also present challenges. While the newly opened outdoor pool has a good railing system for safe entry, the indoor pool and gym require wheelchair users to enter from outside due to interior steps. Similarly, the beach pathway behind the hotel is covered in 1-inch rock, making access tricky for wheelchairs.

Why Accessibility Matters to Us

At Bayside Resort, we believe accessibility isn’t just about compliance—it’s about creating a space where everyone feels welcome. This audit isn’t a final report card; it’s a roadmap for making the resort better for all guests.

Travel should be about relaxation, adventure, and connection—not about struggling with door widths, pool access, or whether you can easily reach the beach. That’s why we’re committed to working on these areas and making thoughtful improvements.

The Next Steps

This audit has given us valuable insights into where we shine and where we can do better. While some accessibility features are already in place, we recognize there’s still room to grow. Over time, we’ll be looking at practical solutions—whether it’s enhancing pathways, improving access to more rooms, or finding ways to make all amenities as welcoming as possible.

Because at the end of the day, accessibility is about more than just a ramp. It’s about ensuring that every guest, no matter their mobility, can enjoy everything Bayside Resort has to offer. And that’s a commitment we’re proud to make.
